Hand and Upper Extremities Center
There is a common misconception that a hand
surgeon only
treats the hand. In fact, a hand surgeon is a specialist (usually an
orthopaedic or plastic surgeon) who has received extensive training and
developed proficiency in the management of disorders of the hand and
upper extremity (wrist, forearm, elbow, upper arm, and shoulder). This
involves, at times, many surgical disciplines including orthopaedic
surgery, plastic surgery, vascular surgery, and neurosurgery. Many
problems of the hand and upper extremity involve skin, bone, muscle,
tendon, joint, nerve, and vascular conditions which in a coordinated
manner, must all be treated simultaneously in a carefully and
thoughtfully staged fashion. A hand surgeon provides total care of the
hand or the upper extremity whether problems are acute (sudden onset or
by injury), chronic, or involving reconstruction of deformities
resulting from congenital anomaly, arthritic conditions, or previous
injury. The physicians at Orthopaedic Specialists of Charleston are
board certified orthopaedic surgeons with additional fellowship
training in hand, upper extremity, and microvascular surgery from
nationally renowned centers and have certificates of Added
Qualifications in Hand Surgery awarded after examination by the
American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. They specialize in comprehensive
treatment and rehabilitation of all medical disorders of the hand,
wrist, arm, and shoulder.

We use our hands at each stage of life for almost
everything we do. All problems involving our health and well-being are
disturbing and any injury that diminishes our hand function can
interfere with our daily lives. Those that interfere with the use of
the hand rank among the most unsettling for they affect our ability to
earn a living, enjoy our leisure time or to carry out activities of
daily living. Our physicians have made it their goal to provide you
with the highest quality of comprehensive care in the most effective
and compassionate manner possible. In so doing, we hope to return you
in as short a time as is medically feasible to your normal activities.
